Home

We are home!! It is so great to be here. All of our flights were on time and we acutally landed a bit early. Natalie got sick toward the end of the flights and Benjamin threw up this morning. But they are doing great now.

We were met at the airport by some wonderful friends and came home to some good old southern comfort food!! Natalie & Benjamin checked things out and then went outside to play. We ate a little, got showered and all were asleep by 8:30.

We woke up at 6:30 this morning, had breakfast & coffee, talked to some friends, played, went shopping and now all are gone bike riding at the park while I unpack and head to Walmart.

Our first day is going smoothly and we are the proud parents of 4 amazing children!!!!

Done!!!

Gotta say....our facilitator rocks! Zhenia left Kiev last night at 10:00 on a train headed for Poltava to pick up the childrens' passports. He arrived there at 4:00 and sat at the train station waiting for them!!! He said they would likely get there by 10:00 or 11:00.

We left the flat at 8:00 and dropped some documents off at the Embassy and then went to the medical center for the required physicals. Zhenia told us to be ready for to wait up to 2 hours, as they see children with their passports first. We went to Dr. Yuriy's office, gave him some papers and he showed us into his office. He immediately went to work with their physicals!!! Praise God. While we were there, Zhenia called and said he had our passports at 9:15!! I love it when God shows up and shows off!!!

David left to get some money to pay for the Embassy fees, as we were going to head straight back there to get paperwork started and pay the fees, and I stayed to finish things up at the medical center. After we left the Embassy, we went back to the flat for lunch and a rest. We then went to the Embassy. We were there about 2 hours and left with Visas in hand!! We thought we were going to have to go back in the morning and pick them up.

Celebration pizza for dinner and now we are resting and thinking about packing. Tomorrow we will head out around 12:30, grab some lunch at TGIFs and then go to the airport. Our plane leaves around 5:30. As I said before, we have a night layover in Paris, but are going to rough it in the airport.

Thank you for all of your prayers, emails, and encouraging words. We know that we could not have made it mentally, physically or spiritually without God or without your support!!!

In Kiev

We are finally in Kiev!! To back up a little, on Sunday we hung around together and on Monday, we packed and got ready to leave. On Sunday, we also had a party for Natalie's class. Alot of the children leave the orphanage on the weekends, so our party was about 7 boys and 2 girls. We had fun though. We brought them candy, fruit and toys. We talked with them and asked each other questions. They tried out their English on us and we tried on Russian on them. When we left, I had the opportunity to hug and kiss each child. It was a blessing for me!! On Monday, we were waiting on word about our passports and we found out that our passports were processed but did not get sent to Poltava. So, we made the plan to travel to Kiev this morning so that we could go to the medical center.

So, we got up at 5:00am and got dressed and started the last of the preparations. The kids got up around 6:15 and we headed out in a passenger van to Kiev- with Zhenia. The trip took about 4 hours. On the way over, we found out that we would not be able to go to the medical center due to some paperwork issues. So, we got settled into our flat. It's a pretty spacious place. We then walked to McDonald's and had lunch. David and I are pretty tired, but the kids are non-stop. Hopefully they will wear down early tonight.

The plan for tomorrow is to go the Embassy at 8:30 and give them some papers so that they can start work on the Visas'. We will then go the medical center and get the children's physicals done. Then we will wait on Zhenia, as he is going back to Poltava to retrieve the passports we have been waiting on. Once he returns, we will head to the Embassy to finish the paperwork on the Visas'. We hope to then get the Visas' on Thursday morning and we fly home that afternoon.

Now, you can see that many things must fall into place for everything to go as planned. We have encountered many delays and obstacles throughout the process. We ask you to pray for this end of our journey. Unless you have been here, one has no idea how things change from minute to minute and how people seem to make up rules as they go along. Please pray that all of the necessary paperwork will be completed in time for us to fly home on Thursday afternoon.

Saturday, Day 37

Not much excitement today. Both Natalie and Benjamin are sick with a cold. This has slowed them down a little. We stayed in until around 1:00. We went to exchange money and walk to the bazaar. It was really hot today. All I have are long sleeve shirts and it was hot. The bazaar was a little walk from us. It is outside, so no relief from the heat. We picked up some tennis shoes for Natalie, as hers are worn out. Benjamin and Natalie also wanted a play telephone. Benjamin really likes his. Natalie wants a real one and I guess she thought it would substitute well. She thinks it's fun, but lost interest quickly. We walked to the market afterwards then came back home.

We spent the evening playing games, talking, eating and watching movies. Does this sound familiar? Everyday, I get the opportunity to get more information from Natalie about her and Benjamin's past. I am so thankful that she shares and look forward to when we can really communicate, so that I can get to know them more closely. All of our children are getting along pretty good. There is the occasional outburst, but all is good.

Jacob and Caleb found out today that they will make their Route 66 party on the first Sunday after we return and they are really psyched about it. This is a party at the end of the year held by our church's children's ministry. Any child who has said all 66 books of the bible may attend. They accomplished this last year, but are able to go again this year. It's alot of fun and they have been looking forward to it for some time now. So, I am glad they will not miss it. They had to miss Cub Scout camp and this was a real disappointment for them.

Benjamin and Natalie are excited about going home and talk about it often. What will we do there? When do we get there? Tell me about my room again? Can I get my hair cut there? Will we go shopping. Those last two are from Natalie, she is all girl. Today, she showed me all of her pink things and said she really likes pink. This is good, so do I. Her new shoes today were pink.

Zhenia says we should get our passports on Tuesday, then we will all head to Kiev. He said that Wednesday will be a very busy day. Please continue to pray that all gets done in Kiev to allow us to fly out on Thursday evening.

Home soon

The past few days have been busy. We have been learning more about our children- all of them. We see happiness, fears, joy, uncertainity, so many mixes of emotions. This is true of the parents, as well! We know we must lean on God alone, as He alone will equip us daily to parent our children.

Thursday, we went ice skating with friends and then to eat. It was a large group and alot of fun. In the evening, we played around at home. On Friday, we went to the Last Bell ceremony at the orphanage. This is the last day of school where everyone graduates to the next grade. It was an elaborate celebration and I am thankful I was able to watch. Afterwards, we spent a few hours at the amusement park with friends. It was alot of fun. The last few days have really helped with our homesickness and giving us that extra spark we needed to keep going.

We found out later in the day that our passports should be here on Tuesday. So, our plan is to travel to Kiev on Tuesday, finish up the rest of the paperwork and fly back home on Thursday. We will spend the night in the airport in Paris, but I am up for anything to get back home. Please pray that our paperwork in Kiev will be completed in one day, Wednesday.

Beautiful day

Today was the first day we had the kids all day. Last night, David brought Natalie and Benjamin home around 7:45. They were really wound up and were so excited to be here. We got so many hugs and kisses from them. I think Benjamin would have jumped around all night. Natalie had already brought her belongings throughout the week and Benjamin carried a small bag of clothes- most of them we bought for him earlier in the year. We all got baths and were in bed by 11:00. It took a while to get them to sleep, but after I laid down with them, out they went.

Today, we woke early and hung around the flat. Benjamin is running a small fever and has a cold. About 11:30, we went to sign papers at the passport office. This is the beginning of getting our passports. Next, off the play then to the market. Back to the flat. After a bit, Benjamin wanted to go to the internat to get the rest of his clothes. So we walked there. Most of his things were too small, so we left them, but he did bring home his backpack. We walked back to the flat. Had a quiet night and got the kids to sleep around 10:00.

Tomorrow, we are getting some documents scanned for the passports and should know a date to fly home so that we can start to plan our flight. Also hoping to connect with the Hall family, here to adopt, and our friend, Cathy.

Please pray that we will find out that our passports will be ready by the first of next week. Also, pray for our family's adjustment- especially Jacob and Caleb.

Paperwork update

David just called and they were able to get both sets of birth certificates and the tax papers today! Heading to pick up Natalie and Benjamin for good tonight.

Mark 10:27 Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God."

Update- Day 33

Well, we have had some eventful times these last couple of days!

Yesterday, started great. I met our friend for a girl's breakfast at a wonderful cafe. It was a really nice time and a special treat! When I returned, we had our daily walk to the market. Then we went to the internat to pick the kids up. The kids and the guards know us now, so when we walk in we get alot of "hellos" which is nice. The kids always give us smiles and waves and will usually run to get Natalie. We picked them up and walked back to in flat. This is where ir gets interesting.

As David starts unlocking the door to the flat he realizes he can't open the lock. He tries for a while, then calls our trusty Zhenia. He calls the flat manager who comes out to check it out - 30 minutes later. The flat manager calls a lock-smith (he calls himself this, but we have our doubts). While the waiting around is going on, I walk all the kids to the market for a snack. When we return, David tells us he is leaving to get another key made and will be back in about 30 minutes. An hour later, no David. He calls and says it is taking longer than expected and he is not sure what we should do. It is now about 3 hours later. It is misting outside and cool. I tell him I am walking the kids to the market for some supper and ask him to call us a taxi. Then....my cell phone dies. Great!! So, I tell the kids we are going. You can imagine all of their attitudes at this time. Little Benjamin starts crying because he has not been inside yet and wants to know where Poppy is. I try to explain to him what is happening and Natalie helps me. We get to the market and I get Natalie and Benjamin some food and ask Caleb and Jacob to wait, as I am running out of money. I can't talk with David so I have no idea if he is calling a taxi. I decide not to chance it as it is getting close to the time I have to return them. So, we walk back. Halfway back, my cell phone rings!! It's David telling me he is on the way and I tell him I am walking them back...then it dies again.

I drop the kids off with lots of hugs, kisses and tell them I am sorry for the day. They have already been told we would not see them on Tues because of paper work. Benjamin is really sad and I feel so bad that they didn't get a real supper or get cleaned up! Me and the boys head back. When we return the flat, David is outside waiting on the locksmith. We are still locked out. The locksmith gets here and tries for about 30 minutes to get the door unlocked. Can't do it. He says he is going to cut the lock. He will be back in 5 minutes. So, an hour and half later he returns!!! We have been sitting in the hall, boys are starving and have to go to the bathroom. The door gets cut open and the lock comes off. It is now 9:00 and we get into the apt. The whole thing took 6 hours!!!! We then get the news that WE owe over 450 grievna for all of this and still owe more for a new lock that will be installed today. I really can't say anything nice about this news, so I will just move on from here.....

So...today (Tues) we went to an office to sign for new birth certificates for Natalie and Benjamin in Poltava and then David headed off with the internat lawyer to get another set in the region of their birth. We are praying that they are also able to get the tax papers they need. If so, we will be able to start processing the passports and looks like we can be home by the 5th!!! If they can't get the tax papers, it will be the first of the following week. Please pray that they will be able to get the needed tax papers today!!!

The best news is that we are moving Natalie and Benjamin in with us tonight once David returns. So, I am getting a few things ready and starting today, we will have all 4 of our children with us! Praise God!!!

Coming up on Day 10 of our wait!!

Today was a good day. Last night, Natalie and Benjamin spent the night with us. This morning, we got up, had some breakfast, got dressed and headed out about 10:00. We were picking Natalie's friend, N, up at the internat around 10:00. We could not locate a taxi driver, so we walked to the internat in hopes that we would have a driver to the mall. After picking up N, who was looking so cute, we headed out. Both girls were really excited about the planned day and I couldn't help but get emotional in the car ride over. We had talked with our friend, Cathy, earlier and she was meeting us at the mall with her friend and D. We did eventually get 2 taxis to take us to the mall. We met up with Cathy and her crew. It was so good to hear a southern accent!!! (She's from Kentucky)

We got all the kids set up to ice skate and we caught up with Cathy over some coffee and juice. The kids had so much fun skating together. D is pretty good at it and our 4 are getting better each time we go. Caleb now wants ice skating lessons "in case he is invited to an ice skating birthday party!" From there, we headed to the arcade for a little time on the games. All of the kids got along great and it was fun to watch them all interact.

After this we went to McDonalds for some food and ice cream. At this point, we split up. Cathy and her friend volunteered to take all the boys with them to the park and David and I took Natalie and N to our flat- which is where they wanted to go. At the flat, the girls took a bath, played outside a little, ate some snacks, watched the movie Spirit, and I painted their nails. N is really a sweet and quiet girl. She has visited the States before and Cathy knew her.

We called Cathy to check on our 3 boys and found out that Jacob had fallen and scraped up his hand and elbow pretty good. Cathy was prepared and took care of him. If I haven't said this before, I will say it now. I pray that Jacob and Caleb come home healthy and without too many cuts and scrapes!!!!

It was time to go and pick up our sons and we found them at Cathy's watching a video. We walked all the kids back to the internat and it started to rain lightly. Benjamin was a little sad and after talking to him, I feel pretty sure it was because he was heading back to the internat and not our flat. I walked him back to his room and as I was leaving, he called out to me "Mom!" I looked back and he was smiling and waving bye! Sweet thing! We went back to Cathy's to chat and pick up some chocolates she brought for us from home to give as gifts. Then headed home for showers and bed.

Tomorrow is day 10 of our 10 day wait!!!! Tuesday is a big day for paperwork. Please pray that we will get all documents that need to be completed on Tuesday done, which will allow us to start processing the kids' passports on Wednesday. This is so heavy on my heart, but I do know that God works all things for good and I pray that I will rest in His sovereignty.

Closer still

As I write this, our 4 children are sleeping in our flat! We received permission to allow Natalie and Benjamin sleep over tonight. They are really happy to be here. It was a rowdy "time to sleep" time, but they are all finally down. Tomorrow, we are taking Natalie's friend ice skating. She has been talking about that alot and we hope it brings them both joy!

Many ways God is showing us that He loves us these days and is in the small things in our life - Our friend, Cathy, called tonight. She is in Poltava. We are hoping to get with her tomorrow, as well. Another friend called us from the States. It was wonderful to hear her voice! Our facilitator is bringing us peanut butter!!

We mostly have been hanging out, playing, eating, etc.. We did try to go to the circus today, but it fell through. We didn't know where it was and it started to rain. Hoping to do that next week.

Not alot new, of course. Looking forward to Tuesday so that we can get this process moving forward. Please pray that God will allow us many working hours in our day on Tuesday to complete birth certificates and tax papers and favor with all the people we encounter on Tuesday. We really need both of these completed on Tuesday in order to get home at the earliest date we have estimated.

Day 6 out of 10

I am so thankful to be on this journey. I am amazed that God called us to adopt again and again 2 children! Somehow, I don't feel prepared or adequate to parent them. I am so glad I am not in this alone. I know that God goes before me and that He equips me. All 4 of my children give me great joy and I feel so blessed to have been given the opportunity to parent them! I pray that God will mold me and use me in order that my children will grow up knowing the Lord, loving the Lord and pleasing the Lord.

Today I am reminded of so many things that I am thankful for-to name just a few:
David is able to be here the entire time
Natalie is now calling me Mama
Benjamin chose to be called Benjamin
Jacob and Caleb desire to be brothers to Natalie and Benjamin despite their struggles
The adoption process is moving along without any problems, only time delays
Uninterrupted time getting to know Benjamin and Natalie
Communication is becoming easier
We are almost finished with the 10 day wait
Friends and family are praying us through our time in Ukraine
Special time with God
Internet that allows us to stay connected

I thought I had come up with a plan to save us some time once we were able to get moving on our paperwork. Note that I said I had come up with a plan. Well, it's not gonna work. So, we are back to waiting and praying and relying on God. A much better plan, but I get so caught up in my timeline...! I am reminded by friends to enjoy my time and to wait on God. I am trying and getting closer day by day. A blog writer I follow has inspired me by his prayers and petitions to God and his total reliance on God to meet all his needs in all of his circumstances throughout his adoption. I read Hebrews 11 again today and pray for mustard seed faith.

Natalie has asked us if we would take her and a friend ice skating and to McDonald's on Sunday. We agreed and got permission to do this from the internat. You should have seen her reaction. Today she asked if her friend could take a bath!!! Of course she can take a bath. This one request keeps playing over and over in my head. I pray that on Sunday we will show the love of Christ to Natalie's friend.

Seems like we have done this before....

Everyday is alike...it seems. We are trying to break up the monotony (sp??) with variations of the same things. Monday we went to the mall for the arcade, some food and for general looking around. Tuesday we went to the park and then back to the flat. Today we went to McDonald's and then back to the flat. The kids want to come to the flat daily, but we try to put in a few variances for all of our sanity!!

We try to vary our food, but that is difficult to do. So, it's variations of chicken, pasta with butter and sandwiches for supper. Breakfasts and lunches are usually the same daily. Coke and M& M's are my happy things. At the flat, we play card games, take baths and showers, watch movies, play some soccer outside, play on the computer...things like that. After we drop them off, we walk back and usually hit the local market for restocking of our kitchen. At night, after the boys are in bed, David and I chat, read or watch a movie.

I tell you....I am ready for home! Everyday I am so happy knowing that I am one day closer. Don't get me wrong, I am happy we have this time together as a family. It is just wearing on me to have nothing to do and no hand in the process. I have no idea when we will be home. It all depends on when paperwork gets finished at each particular stage. Next Tuesday, we have to go and get not one but TWO birth certificates for Natalie and Benjamin in two different regions. If that is finished in time, we can try to get the tax papers completed. I know God is much bigger than any departments or timelines I invent and am trying very hard to trust in His plans and His timing. We are in limbo on when we will go home. It is sometime between June 5 and June 10.

My prayer is that I will rest in God's sovereignity and His ability to cause all things that come into my life to work for good.

Raining in Poltava....again

Today was day 2 of our 10 day wait. The children are counting down the days. It rained all day today. We went out and bought umbrellas yesterday because of all the rain we are having!

This morning we took a taxi down to the Arts Center in Poltava. Natalie was reciting a poem and wanted us to hear her. Great, we are in! When we arrived she and Benjamin ran out to get us. We thought we were going to a recital of some type. It turned out we were attending a pep rally and awards ceremony for a Swedish cosmetics company. It seemed something like Avon. I was laughing the whole time because we were attending something totally different that we expected. However, this company sponsored Natalie's class and several of the children were reciting lines of a poem. We were glad we were able to hear her. They all looked so cute up there!

Afterwards, we all went to the flat together. It was raining so it was a day inside. We played games, listened to music, ate some food and basically hung out. I brought some sun catchers, so we painted those today, as well. We hope to get outside and get active a little more tomorrow. We took Natalie and Benjamin back around 7:00.

The boys Skyped with their friends at church again. They loved it! This week we will basically try to find things to pass the time together. It's good time to be together without distractions and getting to know one another better. All 6 of us are anxious to get to America. We have a friend flying in the end of this week and more friends coming a few days later for their 3rd adoption.

Our family has grown!!!!

We had court today and....we are now the proud parents of 4 children!!!! Praise the Lord!!!! It only becomes really official once we have our 10 day waiting period and are given the court decree. But, to us....it's official!

So, the details----we rode to the courthouse and arrived about 12:45. Shortly afterwards, N and A arrived with the orphanage lawyer, Irene. We were escorted into the courtroom. At this point, I was full of emotion. Then, we had to wait for the Chief Prosecutor. This took the emotional side of it away from me, as the wait was long. All of the kids did great, waiting and the candy we gave them as bribes really helped! She finally arrived and court began. The judge walked in and we all stood. He then went over why we were all there. David was asked to stand and tell them about himself and then I did the same. More reading of documents. Then David was asked to stand again and go into a little more detail of why we want to adopt A & N and about life at home in the states. Then, they asked me to stand. The first thing the Chief Prosecutor asked me if I was scared now that I would have 3 boys and a girl. I thought it was a funny question and laughed and explained that I was already a boys' mom and couldn't wait to have a daughter. She asked me a few other questions- pretty harmless. They asked N if she was in agreement with the adoption- because of her age. She said yes and was very quiet and shy during her questioning. Then a few more readings, introductions of the Inspector and the lawyer.

The judge and the one juror left us to discuss the case and make a decision. The boys were asked at this time to come and answer a few questions about the adoption. They were embarrassed but did a great job! The judge then came back and declared us the parents of....Natalie Hope and Benjamin Andrew Dunham.

Wow!!! It was a very successful time in court and the kids were really emotionally pumped up-all 4 of them. We had to walk to a notary then headed back to our flat. Then we were off to the requested destination to celebrate....McDonald's! Then back to our flat to hang out for awhile, bath for Natalie, then back to the internat. They really don't want to be at the internat now! I walked Benjamin and Natalie to their areas to be dropped off for the first time. As we walked, Natalie was singing "10 more days, 10 more days..." After dropping Benjamin off, Natalie showed me her classrooms and then I dropped her off. It was a long good-bye today.

An interesting side note- as we were at the flat hanging out we had someone ring our doorbell. All I can say is that we are very thankful Zhenia was here! It was the passport police. They wanted to see our passports and wanted to know why we were here. Zhenia complied and did some questioning of his own. It seems like one of the tenants of this flat complex may have called them to have us checked out. I do not know what we would have done if Zhenia had not been here with us! Many phone calls were made when the passport police left and we have a plan if we ever have visitors again. We also have 3 locked doors to enter before you even get into our flat, so someone had to have let him in! Well, we will try to be as quiet and unseen during our duration here!!! Talk about weird....

We now have 10 days to wait and then more paperwork. Please pray with us that after our 10 day wait that we will be able to get moving quickly on birth certificates, tax papers and passports which will all be done here in Poltava.

Orphans...

There are so many kids in the orphanage system here in Ukraine. Today, as I was waiting for A there was a boy and a girl playing in the foyer area. They were all smiles and giggles. I asked them their names. He was Roma and she is Irena. They asked me mine. I watched them play. Then before I knew it, I see Irena squatting down against a wall as if resting. Roma comes up and starts kicking here repeatedly. It was play for them, but I knew it was hurting her. I asked them not to do that. Then the teacher came and rushed them away.

The other day, Zhenia stopped N's class outside and talked with them. They were in a big group and he just chatted with them, quizzing them in English and their studies. They asked us a few questions and we asked them some. Really great kids. I see in their eyes a desperation. It's like they are searching in our eyes for something. I pray when we come across them that they will see the light of Jesus through us.

There is a sweet friend of N's I have met. David met her when he was here in October and I have seen her in pictures. We asked about her and were told she was a good girl. However, she is trapped in the system and unable to be adopted.

There is a brother and sister we met last summer at a hosting program. I saw the sister on one of the first days here. She came up to me with a big smile and a hug. She ran off and then played with me through the window. I have seen the brother a couple of times. He always gives David and I smiles, hugs and high fives. They, too, are trapped in the system and not available for adoption.

There are many, many children like this who live in orphanages. They need prayer, they need hope, they need love. What can we, as Christ followers, do for these kids? David and I pray over this and talk about it often. I know God will lead us to where He wants to use us. Please pray for the orphans of Ukraine and elsewhere in the world. They lead a life where they are forced to grow up too soon and experience hardships and adult situations before they are equipped.

Yesterday, we had a friend over, Lori. She works with Radooga and has been in Urkaine for 4 years. She is from Florida. It was great to sit and talk with her. Her heart is for orphans and you can hear the passion she has for them as she talks. I pray that she is able to get a foothold here in in Poltava. She inspires me. There are friends in Zhytomer who work with orphans and graduated orphans. What they are doing is wonderful and you can see God working through them. We heard of a conference that was held in Kiev for Ukrainians to equip them to work with orphans. How great---Ukrainians who want to work with orphans!!! Getting the nationals involved is key!

Please pray for Ukraine to rise up and care for their orphans and for God to be glorified through it all!

A good day...

Today, we hung around the flat until around 12:00. Then the boys needed to get out, if you know what I mean. So, we all went exploring. Just walking around the area where our flat is located to see what we could see. It was a gorgeous day here, a great day for being outside. We found another market. When we find these, we like to go in and see if it is any better than the ones we know. This one was small, but good. We picked up a few snacks and some things for supper. I am really glad I have a sense of direction, because David kept getting confused as to where we were. I told the boys not to venture out with Dad without me!

We walked to the internat today. It is about a 15-20 minute walk. Going to the internat is mostly uphill. Boy....if we do that regularly we will walk off all the potatoes we are eating! When we arrived, we called for N and I decided to go get A alone. I have never done this before. I usually walk with N. I had to go looking for someone who would get A for me. I found a lady who recognized me. She motioned to me that he was sleeping and she would get him. I waited a little while in the foyer. This foyer is hand painted with huge murals and has these little scenes behind fences that seem to be nursery stories. I want to take some pictures. They are good. A comes running out and seems surprised that I am there alone. But, as always, flashes his great smile!

We go and gather up with everyone else. We ask N to go get a friend of ours, as we have a package to give to him from his future mom and dad back in the states. She gets a teacher to get him and we deliver it. He seems glad to have it. Good to see him, as he had been in the hospital last week.

A & N say they want to go "dom" which means home. This means they want to go to the flat. We tell them we are walking which doesn't really thrill them. But, N seems to know the way and leads everyone. I have no idea how she knows the way, but she does. Thankfully, the walk back is downhill. Much better!!! On the way home, Caleb trips and bangs his head on the ground. Immediately, a huge goose egg pops up on his forehead. I freaked a little, because it looks bad. But, he seems OK.

At the flat, the guys go out and play some soccer. David says that A has talent in this area. Caleb,N and I sit around, she plays on the computer and then takes a bath. I doctored Caleb's head and see the swelling has gone down. I tell you, these boys hurt themselves daily, it seems. Can't wait to have one more boy to add to the group! The boys come back in, play some Uno, start a movie, and I cook.

We have to get this cooking and eating thing down to a science, I believe. A & N eat everything and do it very quickly. We are trying to control supper time, but it's really useless here. What we have decided is that we try to keep A & N from eating supper until it is ready. We then fix all 4 plates and set them out. They come in and eat. As they want more food, we try to refill food and drinks. Once they are done, David and I can eat. This all takes place within 10 minutes. I am brainstorming ideas for home. We understand the "why" and are praying that with consistency and trust, they will learn that food will always be available for them.

We had to call a taxi for the trip back. It started raining. In fact, it's raining as I write this. It rains alot here!! I sure did enjoy the nice weather today. The forecast for the rest of the week is clouds and rain. When we dropped them off, N asked what time we will be there tomorrow. I know they look forward to getting out of the internat daily. We can't wait until they are out for good!!

A has always called us "Mama" and "Papa." But, N calls us by our first names. Today, she called me "Mama" a number of times and David "Papa." She went between the two names. It made our hearts soar to hear her call us something more intimate!

Jacob & Caleb's big day

Today is Jacob and Caleb's birthday. We made the decision to spend some time one on one with them today. We started the day slowly. We slept in and then David made pancakes. He really does make delicious pancakes and at home we love Sat mornings, as this is the day he makes them. But, here, it was a little different. The ingredients are of a different quality and we didn't really have the right equipment. The boys loved them! So did I and I know it made the boys' day to have Dad cook them for them.

After noon, we headed to The Equator, the local mall. Our first stop was the toy store. They brought some birthday money from home and were dying to spend it. Caleb bought Magnetix and Jacob bought...Spy Gear! Then boys wanted to ice skate. I had been the last 2 times, so David volunteered to do it with them today. I thoroughly enjoyed watching my guys skate. Then we headed to the arcade. After the arcade, I picked up some pants for N. It is difficult to shop here because the sizes are different and I can't tell the children's clothes from the adults. But, am glad I found one pair. We looked around and then headed home. Once home, we headed back out to the local bread store so they could pick out a cake. It turns out one wanted ice cream and the other a pastry.

We went home, ate some supper, sang Happy Birthday, and had the dessert. After baths, they wanted us all to watch a movie- WallE. Then off the bed. It was a warm, relaxing and fun day. So glad we had this special time with them. Thanks to everyone for their birthday wishes. Each one of them gave them big smiles. They felt really loved today.

Tomorrow, we will go see A & N after school and spend the evening with them. Looking forward to court this week!

Mother's Day

Happy Mother's Day to all my friends in America and everywhere else!

Today, our family met and spent time with N & A's grandparents. What a privledge. We walked to the orphanage around 12:00 and met them there. They drove in from Chernigov. It was a warm atmosphere when we met them. They were emotional, which made us emotional. We drove to a park and museum where the Battle of Poltava took place. There is also a beautiful monestary there. We then went back to the park near the internat. We were surprised to hear that their grandmother had prepared lunch for all of us. Now, I believe God did this for me! I have been craving some real food, comfort food, a little taste of home. This wonderful lady hand prepared 2 different types of bread- one filled with cherries and one filled with liver. Those of you that know me well know that I adore liver! It was soooo good! A really soft and sweet bread. She laid out this enormous spread on a park bench on top of some cloths. There was the bread, baked chicken & turkey, fresh cucumbers and tomatoes, apples and oranges, another bread and homemade compote. We all raved on it, as it was ALL eaten up! She then brought out the homemade Vodka. They were so proud of it and told us how they had made it. They wanted us to try this. So, I told them a little for me. I put it to my lips, but couldn't drink it!! It was 60% alcohol and was very stong. I played with it until they finished it, then put my cup down. The grandfather drank his small dixie cup size drink like it was water.....Wow!!!

They are precious and we can tell they love and adore A & N. We talked a little about life in Ukraine, about life in the U.S., and the kids. We took many pictures. When we left them, we got big hugs and kisses from them. It was a special gift to get to meet them.

As we walked with Zhenia and talked about our timeline, we are estimating that we may be flying home around June 5th or 6th- give or take a day or two. This is good! It is good to have a goal in mind.

Tomorrow is the boy's 9th birthday. We are going to do something special just for them tomorrow. They really deserve some special one on one time with us. It will be a different birthday, but I hope one they will always remember.

Meeting with mayor's asst

We had our meeting with the Asst Mayor today. We went to the office of the inspector about 5 minutes early. When we got there, she told Zhenia that the Asst Mayor wanted A & N there, too. Zhenia said it never happens, but OK. So, off he raced to pick up the kids. He returned in about 30 minutes (we were left sitting in the hallway). As we waited, the inspector came back out and gave the boys a big candy bar to share. When they all got to the office, out of breath and in their school uniforms, we all went very quickly into the Asst Mayor's (AM) office. We were all introduced to each other. He asked us a few basic questions, asked A & N some questions and then Jacob and Caleb. When they were asked to stand up, they both did with great big smiles and a loud "Preveyet!" This got a huge smile and laugh from the adults. When the meeting was finished, in about 20 minutes, he said he agreed with the adoption. We then went back to the inspector's office to sign a paper.

We all then walked over to the courthouse. It took a little bit to find it and then we had to wait around. We were really hoping to get a court date on Thursday, but with the holiday on Monday (another one) Zhenia felt it best not to chance it. We received a court date of Friday, May 15, at lunch time. Apparently, the judge is fitting us in. Then Zhenia got a car and raced to the SDA in Kiev to submit our papers from Poltava, as they had to be in by a certain time. We have to have SDA papers completed before our court can take place. I must honestly say I am disappointed with the day delay, but trust in God's timing.

We had to get the children back to school. So, the driver took them back. We went to the market...again. Then came home and played Uno. At about 3:15, once our late driver came, we went to the internat to pick up A & N. They wanted to come to our flat. Once here, we played on a playground a short time, walked to the market...again, and then came inside. It was movies, playing, baths and showers (their daily request), dinner and just being together. A is saying "No Ukraine" and N is counting the days until she can live with us. It is getting harder everyday to take them back to the internat.

The boys are getting homesick. Last night was a rough one for them. Please pray for their patience, their compassion, and their heart's protection. They don't handle change well and they are about at their limit. I have to say, I want to come home, too. It's hard being here while we wait, try to find things to occupy our time and juggle everyone's emotions. But, I am glad we are all here together and wouldn't have it any other way. I think we have about 17 days until A & N move out of the orphanage and maybe another 5-6 days after that in Poltava, then on the Kiev for final paperwork. I read on another blog that they check all forms of communication about 5-10 times a day. David and I do the same thing. Thank you for your encouraging notes and comments. It makes our day!

Day 14

Today (Wed) is the 14 day mark in Ukraine. And praise be to God! Zhenia was able to get the signed document we needed from A & N grandfather!

We brought the children here to the flat today. It's where they wanted to go. A great day! Natasha wanted to look at her clothes we brought and then wanted to take a bath. The joy in her face was priceless. We then fixed her hair. (like I know what I am doing...ha) Anyway, I then fixed supper- potatoes for A, chicken for N, cucumbers, tomatoes, bread and cheese. N helped me prepare the potatoes. It was fun with her in the kitchen. All 4 were around me as I cooked. Wow-alot of dodging but felt good! Then A wanted a shower. So, I helped him with that. He really enjoyed it. Afterwards we just hung out. All afternoon, N & A played with Jacob and Caleb. It was so nice to see them interacting and being kids together. Had to take them back too quickly.

On the way home we had to go for towels. We don't have enough of them!!! Then home we went. At home, Zhenia called the inspector and we have our appt with the asst mayor on Friday at 9:00am!!!! After that, we will request a court date for the following Thursday. Please pray with us that we will be allowed to have court on Thurs the 14th.

David is 40 today!

Today was an interesting day. Zhenia left the flat around 7:30 to start on his day of running around getting papers completed. We layed around the flat all morning. For David's big day, he wanted bread, butter and bologna with tea and a boiled egg. So....that was breakfast. We then got dressed. Our friend who just left this area told of a market and some other stores close by. So, me and the boys went exploring. There is a bazaar, a fruit stand, a bread store and a nice market within short walking distance. We came back and got David so he could go with us to see it.

Zhenia then called. There is a snag. A & N have grandparents (which we knew) that are very happy we are adopting them. However, the grandfather wants to meet our family and appear in court and tell the judge that he is for this adoption. This is great, however, it causes a big time delay- as now the inspector says it must be done. She wants a written document from the grandfather before she will complete her paperwork. So, we are all figuring out how this will work. It ends up that Zhenia is heading to Kiev tonight by train to pick up this document which the grandfather is happy to send there so that the inspector will have it. We must have the inspector's signature before we can sit before the assistant mayor and before we can get the court date assigned. Then the grandfather and the grandmother will come to Poltava this Sunday and we will meet them and get to know them. This accomplishes both tasks with only a minimal delay. We are very pleased to meet them, we just do not want the time delay.

For David's birthday, Zhenia took us to this delicious bakery for cake and ice cream. It was a very nice and special treat. We all sang happy birthday to David. A & N were very shy and didn't sing, but laughed and thought it was fun. We then took Zhenia to the train station and then took the children back to the internat. It was a short time with them today, but the time with them was good.

As I was fretting over the time delay earlier today, God brought Prov 3:5-6 to mind: Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight. I was wondering how to fix this situation and this kept coming into my head. It is good that we will meet their grandparents. It is wonderful that they are happy we are adopting A & N. I don't have to understand it all, but only trust in the Lord and He will work all things out according to His will.

Please continue to pray with us that the asst mayor will have an appointment open for us this Thursday or Friday. This will allow us to set up our court date for next week.

Consent papers completed

Today, Zhenia was back with us. And, today, A & N wrote a letter consenting to our adoption of them. They both had to write this letter. It makes no sense to us that a 7 year old child must give his consent to be adopted. For that matter, that an 11 year old is able to make that decision. But, this is life in Ukraine, and we must follow their rules. All glory to God that they willingly and joyfully wrote these letters!

The children had school today, so we didn't get to see them until after 2:00. When we drove up we sat in the car for a short time. I then see N. She comes running up to the car with a big smile on her face and goes inside the internat. This makes us so happy to see her joy. We go inside and get both A & N. She has changed clothes from just a few minutes ago. She has been wearing the same outfit everyday. I think it is her best clothes. Zhenia leaves us to do paperwork and we walk to the park with the kids.

On the way over, we stop to make dandelion crowns. All of the children get into this, with N teaching Jacob how to do it and Caleb and A gathering flowers. It was a sweet time. Zhenia calles us after about an hour and we meet him at the park and then head over to McD. We had promised N that we would take her today.

At McD, the little ones get happy meals and N gets a large size of what she would like. After she is done with that, she wants more and A wants more fries. We then sit and talk a little through Zhenia. It is good to have him here to communicate things we have all been wanting to say, but are unable to. Afterwards, we all head to the park. N and I take a short walk together and the boys play ball. Then David takes A & N to get some chocolate and I stay behind with the boys. We then walk back to the internat. A is upset tonight and starts to cry as we leave him. We keep telling them soon. They are asking Zhenia when it will be over. It is hard for them and us.

I have been having a hard time with some aspects of getting to know N and helping to make her comfortable. As I was winding down tonight, I asked God to help me understand. He brought to my mind that He woos us to Him. Wow! How true. Jeremiah 31:3 says " ....I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore with loving-kindness have I drawn you and continued My faithfulness to you." As we must come to understand and realize that God loved us first and He draws us to Him, A & N must learn that we love them and we must help them to understand and trust in our love for them.

Tomorrow, Zhenia is off and running doing paperwork. Our prayer is that everyone gets their papers signed and completed in the next couple of days, so that we may request a court date this week. We are hoping to have our court date next week.

Sunday in Poltava

Today is Sunday. We went to the internat about 12:00. We went in a back door which led to the dining area. It smelled good in there, we thought! We went into an office and asked for A & N. They knew we were coming. It took an especially long time for them to come. In the mean time, they had a TV on with a comedy in russian. This kept the boys somewhat occupied. There were kids all around doing chores. As were in sitting in this office waiting, a few older girls at a time would come in and look through alot of hair accessories that had been dumped on a couch. They seemed to have a good relationship with the adult in the room and looked quite happy. I don't know if this was a reward of some type of if this happens all of the time. But the girls had fun choosing some headbands or hair clips.

Once A & N came in we walked outside through the back door. This led to an outside area where other children were hanging out or playing ball of some sort. Rap music was playing in the background. I couldn't tell where it was coming from. We all walked to the park that is nearby. Our walk over started quietly and I could feel tension in the air. On the way over, N called out to A and then started rubbing his back talking to him. He was pulling away. Apparently there was an argument of some type going on. Once we got to the park, we played a little. Then A pulled away. N tried to talk with him, then David and I went over. A was very upset, but we couldn't tell what was going on. He finally got up and was fine. I have no idea what it was about- so frustrating!!!

Both A & N seemed tired and didn't feel like playing or walking. So, we decided to take them to our flat. We called Vova and away we went. Once here, they checked it out and looked at all of the boys' toys and gadgets. Then David started a movie that is in russian he picked up a few years back. At this point, I realize I don't see Caleb. I find him upset in the bedroom. I take him into another room. He is very upset about alot of things. After about 45 minutes or so, he calms down and we join everyone else. Please pray for their hearts. It is hard sharing Mom and Dad when you have never had to.

We have a snack and head to the market for a few things. The few things turn into a little fiesta. We come back to the flat and eat some more. A & N really enjoy food! They are asking questions like "When America?" and "No internat" and point to stay at the flat. We tell them soon.... We then head to the park. At the park we walk and play with a soccer ball and just sit and relax. The kids are tired and so are we. We head back to the internat. Once at the internat, we sit around a little in the lobby area again. N has asked about 5 times if tomorrow is the day they sign the documents with the lawyer there. (these are the consent to adopt documents). We tell her yes and she makes sure A knows this. At about 7:00, A needs to get back so he can go to sleep! We give and receive hugs from everyone and let them know we will be back tomorrow. They tell us they want us to come as soon as school is over. We tell them we will try.

Back at the flat, we try to give Caleb and Jacob some needed attention. We ask them what they would like to do with just Mom and Dad this week, if we have the time. They both want to ice skate with us. So, we tell them we will. This makes them happy. It ends up being a sweet night with them.

This is what is about. Splitting our time and making sure that all 4 children know we love them and care for them, that they know we will never leave them and that no one will ever replace them in our lives and in our hearts. I believe God is molding us, making us more like Christ in every circumstance. He helps me to really understand at a deeper level everyday, that we have been fought for and paid for through the blood of Christ. That just as all of our children want more of us, we should want more of Him. He is using our children to help me see the love that He has for us. How I want each of my children to understand the depth of my love for them and to know that nothing will ever change that. And that nothing that comes about will ever change how I feel. Thank you, God, for your sacrifice, for your love, for your grace and your mercy!

Saturday in Poltava

Preveyet! We were on our own today. This morning we slept in until 9:00. We had gone shopping last night for a few staples, so I made scrambled eggs for breakfast. Tasted good! We took our time this morning. Our wonderful driver, Vova, called us at 12:00 and said he was here to take us to the internat. So, off we went. Vova is a great help. We make arrangements with him the day before and he is always available to us when we need him. He is great with all of the kids and very nice and polite. I recommend him to anyone coming to Poltava. May not be the cheapest, but always on time and is a fantastic guy.

We arrived at the internat and asked for N and A. You could tell they were expecting us. Remember, we do not have an interpreter today, so language is going to be difficult all day. After awhile, N is escourted in with a teacher. We say a quick hello and she goes off to get A. When they come back, it's hugs all around and we get in the car with Vova. Off to the Equator mall.

On the ride over, both A & N are quiet. They both say they are OK, but they weren't talking much. Once we got to the mall, N & I went ice skating. N got into it and the ice broke. I think she was hesitant today because she didn't have a way to communicate with us. She asked Zhenia yesterday how we were going to talk. We all kept trying to communicate with them between the few words we know and sign language and finally- it just happened. Between grunts, words and signs, we got our points across. By the end of the day, N was making attempts to try new words and helping us figure out what she wanted to say. I now understand much better how frustrated the kids must feel at times when they come over for hosting.

Anyway, after skating, we went to the arcade. We told them 2 games each. They didn't like it much, but all went well. We then went to get a drink and a piece of cake. N & A really started warming up at this point. We were playing around and joking. So, we then went looking around the mall. I don't know if this was really a good idea or not. It allowed us to just be with them and get to know them better, but it had us saying "not now" or "later" alot. But, in this, we were able to say that when we get home to America, we would go shopping for things. I guess I better get ready for a girl who likes clothes and make-up. Boys just want sticks, rocks, and the occassional spy gear. As we were leaving, N asked when we were going home to America. Tomorrow?? Soon.....

We left the mall and headed to McDonald's. N had never been to McDonald's. We knew A had been before. She was greatly excited about this. Happy Meals for all 4. They were giving out balloons, too! It was awesome to see their smiling faces, especially N, as she experienced McD- something we all take for granted. We can't wait to open up their worlds and help them grow into the young girl and boy God has planned for them!

We left McD headed for the park near the internat. On the the ride over, N was tired. She layed her head on my shoulder and napped. I was in heaven! As she napped, I watched her. Tears of thankfulness and joy came. Who would have thought that I would be adopting 2 more children! God is so faithful.

We played around in the park for about an hour- playing games on the phones, kicking balls and talking. It was then time to take them back to the internat. Sad faces all around. We walked slowly back. Laughing and enjoying the time. Once in the internat, we sat around in the lobby area. It was then time for them to go. We all hugged N & A and told them we would see them tomorrow. One day, one day soon, we will not have to leave our children at that internat....

Day 2 with the children

We have not had consistently working internet since we arrived in Poltava. The earlier post was written in draft yesterday and posted today. We now have internet (Yeah!!!) and are doing well.

We went this afternoon to the orphanage to visit with A & N about 11:30. We went to an office and they called them into us. After a short time, they came in. It was awesome to see them again. We hung out outside while Zhenia and David talked with a teacher they know. I walked around with the kids. We then went to the park. Today is their Labor Day. The park was very busy. They were selling foods, drinks, little toys and clowns and other characters were walking around. The kids rode a few rides and we had a few snacks. Zhenia and David left to go check on internet, so I was alone with my 4 children for about an hour. This was very difficult, but good. I love hearing A call me Mom and N say my name. Just little things she did today showed me that she is warming up to us.

Zhenia and David came back and we sat and chatted a little. N had many questions for me and David. It was great to talk with her and answer her questions. It is showing us that she is really thinking about things and preparing herself to come home with us. The boys kept A busy with rocks, sticks, running and jumping.

I really enjoy hanging out with them both, but so wish we could communicate better. It's so frustrating. If you are coming soon for an older child, try to learn as much functional russian as possible.

We all went for pizza after the park. Then back to the orphange they went. I can't wait for the day they just come home with us!! We walked to it in the rain- a light rain. We hugged them bye and told them we would see them tomorrow. Zhenia has left us to go to Kiev and see his wife and son. We have a faithful driver who will help us get around. Our plans are to visit the children this weekend. The boys are watching a movie after their shower and we plan to kick back. We covet your prayers as this process continues. Monday, N and A must write their consent to allow us to adopt them. Pray this happens without problems. We also need the inspector to finish her paperwork quickly this coming week in order to be granted a court date.

Meeting A & N

This morning, we went to the inspector’s office and picked her up about 9:00. We went to the orphanage from there. The orphanage is very clean and well organized. We waited outside the director’s office for a little while. As we were waiting, a friend walked up. We got to say hello and hug her neck. We talked with her shortly. The orphanage lawyer walked up and we chatted with her for a little while. We were then brought into the director’s office. We were introduced and we sat down. I was very nervous but tried to seem at ease and happy! Shortly, in came N and A!! It brought me to tears to see them! They came in and stood in front of the director’s desk, but looked back at us. A shot one of his classic smiles- warmed my heart. N was very shy and didn’t interact much. We were told we could come tell them hello. The boys ran up to A and gave him big hugs and even hugged N. David and I gave them both hugs.

They talked with the kids a little then A and N both came and sat with us. We showed them some family pictures. A recognized a lot of the pictures and commented on them. N asked a few questions, but was very shy and quiet. The inspector and director then called N over to sit at the director’s desk and began intently talking with her while we were with A. We were realizing that she was very hesitant. This lasted for about 10 minutes then they then dismissed the children. The inspector then talked with us. She said that N is not sure she wants us to adopt her; she would like to spend some time with us away from the orphanage- would we like this? Of course!! So, we were given permission to take N and A away for awhile. The inspector and the director were being very encouraging. Praise God!

As we were waiting for them, we saw kids we knew. Hugs all around! It was great to see them. A came out first and we waited on N. She was being shy and hesitant. One of her friends came out to see us and tried to convince her to come. N saw the inspector again and told her that she and A had already made up their mind that they wanted to us to adopt them. The inspector was happy and said it needed to be said in front of the director, but later. So, she came up. She had changed clothes. David and I gave her a big hug and we all left the orphanage and went to a mall named “The Equator“. This is a very nice mall with an arcade and ice skating rink. On the ride to the mall, Zhenia translated for us. David and I talked with N, asking her questions about herself and she asking us questions.

At the Equator, we went first to the arcade. All 4 played so many games. We helped them and played with them, too. We then went ice skating. I skated with all of the kids while David took pictures. It was a lot of fun. A quit shortly after starting, I don’t think he liked it. I skated with the other 3, as did Zhenia. N skated with me and raced with me. It was while we were skating that our family grew for certain. N went up to Zhenia and told him to tell us that she wanted to be adopted by us. He told her to tell us, but she said she couldn’t speak English and she wanted him to tell us. So, he told each of us separately. When he told me, he was with N. She watched my reaction. I winked and smiled at her, then teared up. Awesome!

We then went to get a drink and some dessert. The boys sat at a table with A and N. N helped them with their drinks. Afterwards, we went to a large market at the mall and bought some candy for her friends. On the way over, we stopped and looked at jewelry. She likes jewelry. We bought A and N candies for their friends.

So, we started back to the orphange with the kids. Once there, we hung out together in the lobby area and played around with them while Zhenia ran around on paperwork. We left quickly, as we had to get to the notary. We hugged N and A good-bye and told them we would see them tomorrow. After the notary, Zhenia told us that the orphanage had completed all of the necessary paperwork on their end. In one day- again Praise be to God! There is a holiday on Friday and Monday, which will slow us down a little. But we are hoping to have court in 2 weeks and be finished in Poltava around the end of May. Then off to Kiev and home between the 10th and the 16th of June!

All in all, an exciting and exhilarating day! I have learned that God’s timing is perfect and I acknowledge His sovereignty. I have also learned that being Mommy and Daddy to 4 kids is going to keep us hopping! God is in control and I don’t have to be- so happy to keep learning this.

1st Day in Poltava

Today is Wednesday. Yesterday, we traveled to Poltava by car. It was about a 6 hour drive. We were really tired, so we all napped a little on the way. The roads into Poltava are really bad. Reminded me of driving I-20 in Jackson, MS, but much worse! Beautiful countryside, however. Many fields and farm land. We saw individuals hoeing huge fields by hand. We arrived here and met a man who arranged for a flat here for us. It is a really spacious flat with 2 rooms, a living area and a nice size kitchen. The outside made me nervous, but it’s like that everywhere here. We got settled, went out to find a burger and to the market to get things for breakfast. The boys didn’t get into bed until after 11:00 and we were about 1:00 going to bed.

Today, we went to the inspector’s office to get permission to go to the orphanage and visit the kids. Well, it seems that this is the inspector’s day off. But, her assistant called her and she said she would come in around 4:00 and meet with us and go to the orphanage with us at that time. So, we went around and got internet set up, had lunch and went back to flat to rest. We went back to the inspector’s office at 4:00. She was there! A very nice lady. She called the orphanage and found that the director was absent today. So, she called her cell phone number and talked with her. The director said to come to orphanage in the morning at 9:00.

So, a frustrating day. But, I pray about what God is teaching us, know that He is going ahead of us and will be glorified through all of this hassle! His timing is perfect. The boys were really psyched up to see the children and it was a huge let down to them. And with all of the running around in circles and the car ride yesterday, they were very restless. But, they are doing really good and being troopers. I know it is hard for them to sit quietly and patiently so much. We are proud of their behavior and their self control.

We will have the meeting with the orphanage director in the morning and then visit with the kids. Please pray that the meeting with the director and with the children go well. We are confident that God is preparing the way, while we do not know what is in store, we trust in Him alone.

SDA appt

This morning we had our SDA appt at 10:00. We walked over with our facilitator. Side note-Got to quickly meet the Underwood's facilitator and David and I both looked at each other and said "The Jedi." We waited outside the hallway for just a little bit. Then we were sent upstairs. All 4 of us sat down and the lady at the SDA (very nice with pretty smile) asked us some questions about ourselves and our family. Asked some questions about our boys and then gave us some information on the children, A & N. Everything went very smoothly and we were out of there within 15 minutes or so. It was a very easy interview process and all went well. Thank God! We will head to Poltava tomorrow morning around 11:00!!!

Afterwards, we met a friend of Zhenia's who was going to take us sight seeing. David wanted to go back to the flat to rest. He did great through the appt, but started feeling like he needed rest. We all ate lunch together and parted ways. Lena is the young lady who escorted us around Kiev. For 4 hours we walked and saw the sights: World War II memorial, a new memorial to remember the time of starvation in Ukraine, St. Andrew's church (we were able to go inside and look around and it is really beautiful), and walked through many parks. We rode the metro a couple of times, took a bus, and rode the venicullar (sp??).

A little more info on the bus ride: we get on the bus and find some seats. Then Lena tells me how much the ride is going to cost. I give this to her and she passes the money up to the driver by way of the other passengers. Everyone pays this way and gets their change this way! I have no idea how he knows if everyone pays or if anyone actually gets their change back- interesting! The bus makes several more stops and so many more people get on the bus. I keep thinking "There is no way anyone else is going to fit in here." But they do! No personal space!! Lena calls to the driver to tell him to stop and he does. We are about midway on the bus. Everyone in front of us gets off the bus to let us out and then they all get back on when we are out. The whole thing makes me laugh!

Lena asked us if their metro is different than ours. I just laughed and told her we don't have a metro! Couldn't even imagine it. 280 is bad enough!

Later this evening, we met our friend, Hollie for dinner. She just left Poltava with her 3 new additions to her family. It was nice to chat with her. She gave us some info on where things are in Poltava and other points of view. It was good to see her and see her children again! Pray for them as they are on their last leg of the process. They hope to be out and on a plane headed to AL by the end of the week.

The driver is picking us up at 10:00 in the morning. We have about a 5 hour ride to look forward to. We can't wait to see A & N!! Please continue to pray for God to go ahead of us. This has been my prayer for awhile. A sweet friend gave me a card before I left. I read it last night. Inside it had some sticky notes with scripture on them. The first one I read was Deut 31:8: The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you, He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid, do not be discouraged. Awesome! God is faithful!

Sunday update

Can you imagine being cooped up in a 500 sq ft flat with 2 boys and a sick husband?? Well, I was and badly needed some way out. I checked email and there it was. A saving email from our friend, Ben. He said he could get us to his church for the 4:30 service if we wanted to come. So, I got the boys dressed and myself ready and we headed out. I was venturing out alone with some grievna and a cell phone. I have no idea where I am. Ben had to call our facilitator to find out where to send the taxi. We go outside and look for the taxi. Don't see one. David comes out and says that Ben says it's around the corner. We go around the corner-no taxi. We walk back toward the flat and see a taxi sitting in front of the flat. I look inside and sort of motion toward us three and getting into his taxi. He nods. We get it and I pantomine phone call. He says da. So, we get in and I pray that this guy is taking us to the church. We end up at a building with the #3 on it. Ben said to look for a #3. He asks me something in russian. I say da and give him some money. He gives me change and we go in. Thank you, Lord, this was the right place.

We find Tanya and Ben. We recognize some of the music. Tanya takes the boys outside to play in a little courtyard with some other children, including their Emma. Ben had introduced this man from MS that was there to adopt 4 children with his wife. This man, Tony, was going to preach. I thought I had missed it this morning and am thrilled to know I get to hear it. His wife sings a song and her voice is beautiful. Tony's sermon was on the parallels of adoption into God's family and families adopting orphans. Gal 4 was the scripture background. As he is talking, I started thinking "Wait a minute. His story sounds really familiar. I think I have heard of him through some friends who go to his church."

Afterwards, I go up and introduce myself and we start chatting. Not only does he know my friends from MS, but he knows our pastor and his wife and knows the Hall family. Incredible how in this foreign land, I cross paths with a man and his wife who are from MS, who have a common passion for orphans and who knows friends of ours. They also met our friends who are here in Poltava adopting. We ended up going out for pizza with them, Ben, Tanya and Emma. It was a very nice evening with old and new friends. I will put a link to Tony and Kimberly's adoption blog up on my blog. Please pray for their journey, as they are in the middle of their 10 day waiting period which follows court.

David says he is feeling better. He slept while we went out. As I said, tomorrow is our court date. We will let you know as soon as we can how it all went.

Sunday

Yesterday, we stayed in most of the day. David is really not feeling well. I tried to convince him to go to the doctor, but he will not go. I read up on bronchitis and there isn't really an antibiotic to treat it- just lots of rest and liquids. So, we watched a movie, played some games, and layed around. We went out to eat and to go to the market. Came home, showered the boys, played some Uno, read them a bit of Wizard of Oz, then put them in bed. David and I stayed up a bit then went on to sleep. It's exciting around here for us!!! (ha)

Today, Caleb and I are getting out. We are going to go explore the open market and just walk around. Jacob wants to stay in with David. From there, I don't know.

Our appt is tomorrow at 10:00 am- that's 2:00 am Bham time. We pray things will go smoothly and that we will receive our referral quickly. We must have this referral in order to visit the region of the orphanage. We appreciate your prayers.

During my bible study last night, I read this verse: I Cor 10:31 Because, whatever you do, eating or drinking or anything else, everything should be done to bring glory to God. That is my prayer. That no matter what I am doing, taking care of David, keeping the boys entertained in a very small flat without toys, walking or shopping around Kiev without any personal space, or sitting in our appt at the SDA, may it bring glory to God.

Saturday

Yesterday afternoon, our facilitator, Zhenia, took us around Kiev in the City Centre. Very busy area. We walked all over for about 5 hours. It was really nice. The weather was just cool enough for a light jacket. As we were going into a market, Zhenia received a phone call from a friend of his. He gave the phone to me and it was our friend, Vicky, who was across the street at TGIF. They spotted us through the window! So we walked over and sat with them for awhile. It was good to see her. She is leaving today to go home. He showed us many monuments and exhibition halls, a park area overlooking Kiev and we did a little shopping. We ate dinner at the Fat House. We did pretty well by pointing. Came home and settled in for the night.

We were able to Skype with some friends and David's parents. It's really nice to be able to do this and I highly recommend if for those of you coming over soon.

Before we left the states, David went to the doctor and was diagnosed with bronchitis. He got a steroid shot and an antibiotic shot and is feeling better than he did. But, he has a horrible cough that sounds really bad. Caleb also has a bit of a congested cough. So, today we are staying in and resting. Hoping David will get to feeling better with more rest. Our flat is very cold and we do not know how to turn on the heat. I hope we get this figured out today.

We are on our own for the weekend. So, we will likely not venture too far from our flat. With David not feeling great, I will be trying my best to be creative (hard for the creatively challenged!) in an attempt to keep the boys entertained.

Made it!

We are here! We had a really good trip, although no sleep. We didn't sleep. The boys didn't sleep. We were all awake roughly 30 hours or so. Got to Kiev and was met by our facilitator, Zhenia. We got through customs faster than you could blink your eyes! Amazing.

Zhenia brought us to our flat. A nice place in the middle of everything. Not far from the SDA I am told. He took us for a walk to show us where things are and to get us hooked up with phone and internet. The weather is nice. We had a light jacket on. Young people everywhere in Kiev. We took us to a market where we bought a few things for the flat. He left us.

The boys think everything is beautiful and cool. It is fun to see things through their eyes. They say they think Kiev is great, but don't like all the smoking and drinking of alcohol!

We went on our own to......McDonald's. David tried his best to order for us. We didn't get what we wanted, but it was good. We came back to the flat and showered and fell asleep.

This morning (or really it is almost noon), we are going to get with Zhenia again to go over details. I am not sure what else. But the boys want to go see things. Caleb brought a camera and he wants to take pictures.

God is sufficient for me! I am not anxious about anything and know that He is in control. Praise Him! Thank you for all of your prayers.

We leave

Well, we think we are ready. We are almost packed with only 7 bags and 4 carry-ons (ha), we have details worked out for the care of our home, our dogs are with the bestest brother and sister in the world :), and many of our family and friends are on Skype ready to play with it with us! We arrive in Kiev Thursday evening.

David and I are having some sinus troubles, but nothing some meds and sleep won't help, I'm sure. Over the past weekend, we had the opportunity to hang out with some of our friends and eat some great crawfish and at church our friends prayed over us (more than once) and we feel so confident knowing that they are going out on our behalf to the throne of our Lord! The boys are having mixed emotions about leaving, and frankly, so are we. We are about to leave our little life for the unknown for who knows how long. But we know that God goes before us and He is our rock and our shield. We are definitely excited about this adventure.

We will try to blog about the details as much as we can. We look forward to sharing our adoption with you.

6 days and counting....

Wow! We are extremely busy, but, oh so joyful. I realized last night that we have 6 days before we leave. In 6 days, we will embark on an adventure that will begin to grow our family more into what God has planned for us. I can't wait for this!

We have been shopping, cleaning, making lists, packing (well, I have plans to), organizing, making more lists, making arrangements for our 2 dogs (big thanks to Uncle Aaron and Aunt Sharron), calling family, figuring out how to care for our home while we are away (huge thanks to our friends), planning for school lessons while we are there, and praying.

We know of a number of families in Blogland that are going to be in Kiev around the same time as we are. Hoping to get to meet them. We have been invited to go to church with a friend who lives in Kiev on Sunday. They are actually going to have someone preaching who is from Mississippi and is in the process of adopting. Sounds great!

We are looking forward to this extended stay in Ukraine. At times it is sure to be long, lonely, isolating, and challenging. But, we pray that people will see Christ through our family and that they will see the hope we have and wonder why. We hope God will open doors of opportunity for us while we are there- opportunities to help, to love, to encourage, whatever He calls us to. We pray we will be sensitive to His voice.

"Trust in the power of God rather than human wisdom." 1 Cor 2:5

Stuffed animals

Today we bought 50 stuffed animals for the kids in the orphange we go to visit. It was joy watching my two sons carefully choose the animals: would a child like this one? this one is too beat up. is this one cute enough? They dug through many trying to find the right ones. Then we get them home, count them up, check them all to see if any need mending, decide if they are boy animals or girl animals. Then my sons go to their stuffed animal stash and donate some from there saying that their animals will enjoy the ride over and get lots of love in their new home.

I love that my sons are excited about their soon to be siblings, making plans for them all and counting down the days until we leave. I know it will be an adjustment for them, but to see that their heart is accepting to the situation helps me to know that it will all work out. They said this morning at breakfast, "Now you are going to have even more children from Ukraine!"

Yes, we are!

Adoption is amazing

Here is an excerpt from a blog I am reading. How my thoughts and heart mimic theirs:

For most people reading this, they just can't imagine how adopting can be such a memorable experience. Yet hopefully, other fellow adoptive parents can relate and testify that I am not crazy. Adoption is an amazing...... beautiful..... unforgettable...... close as you get to God experience this side of heaven. It is just as amazing as giving birth to your child........ it is exactly like giving birth to your child. Alexsey may not have been born of my flesh and blood, but he is very much a part of me, already. I know that I am not capable on my own of preparing my heart to feel the way it feels...... this is a miraculous thing that God does. Knowing this draws me all the closer to Him. It makes me think how I have been adopted by HIM..... how all of us that want to look to HIM as our Father have been adopted by HIM, and it gives me goosebumps to think that HE feels similar to how I feel about Alexsey. That is incredible to me!

David and I secured our plane tickets last night. We fly out on April 22. That is a bit early, but we did this to get the best value for our money (or SkyMiles). We plan to take the boys on a tour of the history of Ukraine and show them all they have been asking about. We are full of anticipation as we wait out the remaining 2 weeks we have left here. May God gain all the glory as we seek to bring home our children.

Boys' Birthday

Today we are celebrating Jacob and Caleb's 9th birthday about 5 weeks early. We will be in Ukraine on their actual birthday, so we wanted to be sure they were able to celebrate with friends. We are having a laser tag party and they both really excited about it.

We are finishing up last minute details. Time is passing by fast. With Easter next weekend and a crawfish boil the next, we will be on the plane headed to Ukraine before we know it. David has been working especially hard to prepare his office to function without him there for an extended time. Thankfully, we will have Skype and other technologies to keep him in touch with his office.

19 days and counting......

We have a date!

Hello! We have a date...April 27th! We have one month to prepare and much to do.

Praise God for His provision in so many ways! We are seeing God provide for this adoption through many friends. They tell us it is from God....but He is able to provide only through their obedience! What an awesome testimony!! We have friends helping - financially, physically and through prayer. Everyone has been so encouraging and supportive. We stand in awe as we watch our faith family and other fellow believers support and love us. It is difficult to put down into words the emotions and the gratitude that we feel, as we are overwhelmed by it. We thank you and we love you!

Still here

Hi everyone. We are still waiting. We know our requested documents were given to the SDA last Friday. We expect to hear of an appointment date any day now. We are eagerly anticipating the date!

We have 3 sets of friends in Ukraine right now who are adopting older children. Wow! It is amazing to hear their stories, a blessing to be an observer through their blogs and a participant through prayer.

We are going to buy beds this weekend (need those!). The rooms are almost complete. We are pushing Jacob and Caleb's birthday party up a month. They are excited about that, but have reservations about what their actual birthday in May will look like. We tell them not to worry.....

So, we are going on with life in a state of expectation and hope. Praise God for His faithfulness, His lovingkindness and His sovereignty.

Successful submission...sorta

Yesterday, our documents were submtitted to the SDA! However, we were missing an important paper, it seems. They will not issue an appt date until we give them this paper. So, off to Montgomery the boys and I went to track down the papers and have them apostilled. It was a flying trip, but a successful one. Everyone we encountered was very pleasant, which made the trip much more tolerable. The lady who does the apostilles asked if we were any closer- we have seen her 3 times now within a few weeks!!

Our friends are traveling to Ukraine today to finish up their adoption and they have graciously agreed to carry our documents with them and get them to our facilitator. What a blessing!!!

Now, we wait until these new papers are submitted to the SDA and then we wait to hear of an appt date. That's the name of the game......wait!

Pre-registered

We received word that our dossier has been pre-registered and we have an official submission date of March 17!!! Our dossier has been checked and found to be OK to submit, without errors. Praise God! This is a huge blessing! We are in nesting mode around here- making preparations and plans. The boys ask daily "When do we leave?" They are as anxious as we are.

On another note, we have made the decision not to lead a mission trip to Ukraine this summer as we had wanted. The timing of our travel for the adoption and the travel for the mission trip would be too close together. It would be chaos for us. God has given us peace about this decision and we are looking forward to traveling there on mission at another time- hopefully not too far into the future!

We wait....

Our facilitator in Ukraine has received all of our documents!! He said he is finishing the translation and the preperations to submit it to the officials at the adoption center in Kiev. He will let us know when he is going to submit. So, it's there and totally out of our hands at this point- but God is in total control and is much larger than any officials or government heads anywhere. Our trust is in Him alone!

Dossier completed

We sent our final papers today to Ukraine- including our I797 (which used to be called an I-171H)! We do not know when we will be called to Ukraine for our appointment. All we can do is wait. Please pray with us for the officials at the SDA who give out the referrals and for the officials in the regions who grant families permission to visit the orphans. Pray that their hearts will be softened toward the orphans and that they will see the love of Christ through families who come there to bring the children into their lives and their homes.

Shipped out

We shipped our almost completed paperwork (dossier) to Ukraine today. It should be there by the first of next week. Wow! This really makes it more than an abstract idea... it's more of a reality! We still have a waiting game to play, but what a blessing and what a ride it will be. Praise God and may He receive all of the glory!

Paperwork and more paperwork....

We headed to Louisiana this weekend to pick up some needed papers for the USCIS. We were able to get the certified papers they requested quite easily. We sent them priority mail to Atlanta. They should get there on Tues or Wed of next week. Our facilitator emailed us asking if we have received our 171 yet. It is reassuring to us that he checks in on us and our progress occasionally. This should be all they need and hopefully things will get finalized and approved so that we can get our dossier over there!

We are sill considering our options for a mission trip to Ukraine this summer. Please pray with us for direction and discernment in this area.

Lost

Last week, after trying for weeks to find information on the status of our paperwork, I received an email from USCIS stating that they did not have our home study. Well......I went into panic mode. Our social worker said it was sent to them about 8 weeks prior. So I started emailing and calling at an alarming rate. After talking with my social worker and a friend who knows about "things of this nature" our home study was again sent to USCIS on Feb. 4.

We then received a letter requesting more information from them. So now, we are more delayed than we had hoped for. So, we march forward and try to gather all records needed.

Hope

I love the Internet. I love that people blog about their adoptions. It helps so many get through the drudgery of the paperwork and the waiting! I love reading blogs about Christ followers who have a heart for orphans.

But, today I heard a story about a teacher in an orphanage and her relationship with her students. It was not a heart warming story and it reminds me that these kids are in a position of vulnerability without a voice. These kids need to be loved, need to be cherished and need to know that they have hope. Their hope lies in Jesus Christ. People will fail them every time, but Jesus will love them eternally. God is bigger than their situation and He is sovereign. I want to share the love of Christ with these orphans. I want them to know that they mean something, that they are loved and that God believes they are worth Jesus dying on the cross.

God is bigger than the government here in the States and bigger than any government. He is Lord of lords and King of kings! My hope is in Him alone. These kids need this message. I thank those families who are there now and who have been inside the walls of the orphanages spreading the Gospel. Jesus is their hope.

Update

We haven't posted in a long time and wanted to update you. We are waiting on our I171H to come in. While we wait, we are getting POAs, medicals and other things completed. We truly hope to have the dossier all together by the end of the month. We have no idea if this is even possible, but that is our goal.

God has used the past few weeks to confirm for our family the purpose to which He has called us. We anxiously await the time we are in Ukraine to bring our children home!
